Full Moon in Scorpio: Swimming Through Your Shadows

Get ready- this one’s gonna be INTENSE!

The full moon falls in the sign of Scorpio on Saturday 18 May. Scorpio, itself, is a water sign that rules death and rebirth, transformation, and deep feeling and knowing. So in and of itself, this full moon that falls in April or May every year is usually one that is connected to feeling deeply, purging, and big emotional or life transitions.

I’ve been very connected as of late to my pet snake, Maia, and I have been keeping her old sheds (snakeskin) around me rather frequently. It is a constant reminder that leaving old skin behind means room for new growth. That discarding the dull means that the shiny and bright can envelop me. That as much pain as she is in when she is shedding- it basically feels, from what I understand, like her entire body is covered in blisters- it is worth it, in the end. She always leaves her skins behind and romps around her tank all smiley (I truly believe that she smiles… I can feel it).

Growth and change are painful. It is not easy for a seed to break into roots and stems, and for those stems to break the surface of the ground, and for the leaves to emerge amongst hail and wind and thunderstorms. But when the flower blooms, and the sun-soaked rays tickle its petals, you can easily feel the joy in the air surrounding it.

That is what this Scorpio full moon is about. It’s about feeling the pain of growth. It’s about feeling the pain of leaving behind old things that are no longer in service to you. It’s about looking at the things that are a part of you that it might not be possible to release, no matter how much you might want to. It’s about looking at all of your “flaws” and triggers in the process. It’s about facing the uncomfortable emotions that tend to surface as we shift.

All of this Scorpio energy is magnified with Saturn and Pluto in retrograde (Jupiter is, as well, but Saturn and Pluto play a much bigger part).

Anytime a planet goes retrograde, the aspects that they represent become more of a focus within our lives. Saturn is the planet of lesson learning and fear facing. So you can see how that would play a role in this energy. Pluto, in tandem, is the planet of walking through your personal underworld, and is actually highly affiliated with the sign of Scorpio. Pluto is here to hold our hands as we walk through our shadows and dive deep into the murkiest of our own waters before emerging stronger, more resilient, wiser versions of ourselves.

What shadows are you facing? What are you finally being forced to be honest with yourself about that you can no longer hide away or hide from? How can you honour your own resilience? How can you allow yourself to feel whatever emotions are coming up, no matter how uncomfortable?

Remember: You are only human. You deserve to give and accept compassion from yourself as you experience the blisters that come with shedding, and the pains that come with new growth.

PS- If you are looking for help to work through this time, the very last Doorway to Self ritual is available and open to the public, and can be accessed, here.
