What is Clairsentience? (Psychic Sensitivity)

What does it really mean to be Clairsentient?

Clairsentience comes from French clair meaning ‘clear’ and Latin sentir meaning ‘feeling’, coming together to translate directly into ‘clear feeling’. It is the psychic ability to feel the energy between yourself and others, within the spaces that surround you, and between yourself and objects. It is usually an indescribable physical sensation that is stimulated energetically, but can sometimes cause rise to emotion, as well.

Some people may experience this as a prickling of hairs on the skin, chills, hot or cold sensations on or in the body, a tingling of the skin, ‘butterflies’ in the belly, or itching. Others may experience it through a general anxiety that overtakes them, a drop or rise in barometric pressure, headaches, body aches, or through feeling as though they have a need to come out of their skin.

Words to listen for when you or someone else is describing a clairsentient experience to know that it is clairsentient would be adjectives such as, “I feel”, “I felt”, “I was/am feeling”, or “I was/am experiencing”. For instance, “I experienced a shift in the room when Maxine walked in”, or, “I feel as though you’re angry”.

Many people tend to mix up the idea of clairsentience with clairempathy (being an ‘Empath’, i.e., the ability to feel other peoples’ feelings or physical sensations as though they are their own), or they put being clairempathic under the more general umbrella of clairsentience.

However, I think it vital to separate the two, as with clairsentience, one recognises another’s emotions within themselves as reflected from the other person, i.e., “I can recognise that you are feeling angry because I felt the energetic shift that would suggest that you are feeling angry”, whereas with clairempathy, one literally feels the other person’s emotions as though they were his/her/their own, i.e., “I may or may not be able to recognise that you are feeling angry because I am feeling angry and am not necessarily sure why I am feeling angry because it is kind of out of the blue so it might be that you’re angry and that’s why I’m feeling this way”.

Think of it this way: people who are primarily clairsentient (and it is possible to be both clairsentient and clairempathic) experience the emotions of others through a type of filter that acts as a strainer, whereas for empaths, there is no filter.

To use a metaphor, a clairsentient experience would be like knowing that it’s cold outside because your arm hairs went up and your insides felt weird and you understood through that experience that the trees were cold, while a clairempathic experience would be like knowing that it’s cold outside because despite the fact that you are wearing 7 coats and it’s 80 degrees indoors, your insides just won’t get warm because your insides are feeling the actual feeling that the trees outside are feeling. Now, that is an extreme example (and, by the way, if you are feeling other living things’ feelings that strongly, there are ways to work through that and make life easier and you should check out my psychic training offerings), but it illustrates the point well enough.

People who primarily or singularly exhibit clairsentience feel other people’s emotions through a shift in energy, where people who are primarily or singularly clairempathic feel other people’s emotions (or physicalities) through actually feeling the exact thing that that person is experiencing.

However, clairsentience is not only about feeling a shift in energy due to a shift in emotion. It can also be about feeling a shift in energy due to, well, a shift in energy.

With clairsentience, you are exhibiting physical manifestations of experiencing what it feels like for your energy to interact with other energies that are on different frequencies, and attempting to calibrate to them. When you walk into a room and get the chills, it is your body’s psychic reaction to being in a space that is on a different frequency level than you are. This is neither positive nor negative, but a simple act of trying to gauge where your energy “fits in” with the energies around you.

People with high amounts of clairsentience often experience or have been diagnosed with high anxiety, social phobias, panic disorder, somatic illness, overwhelm, ADHD, OCD, depression or dysthymia.

However, clairsentience does not only have to be experienced in these challenging ways. It can also be experienced when giving or receiving energy work, listening to resonant music, when you have a soul connection with someone, when you are feeling in sync with a person, place, or thing, when you are feeling in alignment with yourself or an idea, and so much more.

Clairsentience- just like any other psychic ability- is merely another sense that we can utilise to understand the life that we are living. When you smell something and it smells “off”, you take it as a warning sign not to touch it or eat it or go near it. When you smell something and it smells divine, you take it as a sign to continue to smell it, go near it, touch it, or taste it.

The same thing goes for clairsentience. If, for instance, you are getting a really sick feeling in your stomach every time you are in a particular place or around a particular person, you may choose to see it as a sign to stay away. If, say, instead, you are getting a warm, opening sensation in your chest, you may choose to see it as a sign to stay around that place or that person.

We need to start viewing our psychic senses as a reality, and as part of the way in which we are interacting with and gathering information from the world around us. Science is starting to prove it through thermal imaging and brain imaging. Smell can’t be seen and no one ever had to prove that smell exists and is tipping us off to life. Let’s get with the programme.

Do you think that you or a loved one experiences clairsentience?
