Aries Full Moon, Autumnal Equinox, and Planets a-Shiftin’: Spinning into Balance, Passion, Speaking Truth, and New Beginnings

Just keep breathing… The end of crazy is in sight- I promise. Many of us have been experiencing a lot of grief, confusion, resentment, lack of clarity, setbacks, illness, anxiety- the list goes on- lately. Lately, like, within the last month.

So let me tell you what’s going on, because it’s a little cray cray up in that sky of ours, right now.

In April, Saturn and Pluto went retrograde (the planets shifted in a movement that appeared to be orbiting backwards from the earth’s atmosphere), challenging us to face our greatest fears, relearn our hardest lessons, and really look into the pits of ourselves to understand our underbellies on an intimate level. Shadow work has been at its highest.

In June, Neptune and Mars went retrograde, challenging us to face the reality amidst our illusions, to see what we did not want to see before, to get angry, and to speak out and speak up about that anger.

In July and August, Mercury and Uranus went retrograde, challenging the way in which we communicate, our patience, and movement versus stagnancy.

So- that’s the background. The set up. For where we are now.

When a planet moves backwards, it has to move backwards from a certain point- the point where it is in the sky- and when it moves forwards again (also called going “direct”), it has to catch back up to the point that it started going backward from. This period of time can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks for closer planets like Mercury, up to a few months for further planets like Neptune or Pluto. This is called the “shade” or “umbrella” period.

At the end of August and beginning of September, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn all went “direct”, which means that they are all very currently working their way back to their starting point before retrograde- they are all in the shade period. Plus, Pluto is about to go direct again at the end of this month, as well, so we are already feeling the energies of that, too.

This is usually when shit starts to hit the fan. Why? Because the planets are like, “Nope, nope nope nope- you’re not getting away with life that easy! We have to make sure that you have learned everything that you were supposed to during this point in time before you move forward.”

Think of it this way: When you watch TV and then rewind 10 minutes and then push play again, you’re going to have to watch everything over again that you already rewound through to get to the point you were at, again. You are going to rewatch the car driving down the street, though this time forwards instead of backwards. You are integrating a different perspective. But, when retrograde happens, it slows everything down… so imagine it like your rewind setting is half as fast as your play setting, and when you push play, everything speeds up.

So while we’re sorting out everything with lessons surrounding fear, anxiety, anger, communication, creating and finishing tasks, and shadow work, (all sped up, mind you), Neptune and Uranus are still retrograde and not going direct until the end of November (Neptune) and the beginning of January (Uranus), and those are slowing us down in the way that helps us to “stay put” and look at what we were wanting to remain ignorant about. Uranus also helps us to face our “crazy”, the moments when we feel we fly off the handle, when we don’t recognise ourselves because we’re so overtaken by fear, when we are manipulative or conniving just to get attention… you get the idea.

What does this mean? On the one hand, you may be feeling like you are caught in the midst of the hurricane that the earth has decided to present us with, physically, to mimic what is going on energetically. On the other hand, you may feel stagnant; stuck; like the air has settled thick and stuffy in a sick room and the latches on the windows are rusted over. Things are slowed and moving at the same time, and it’s causing feelings of confusion, lack of control, fear, and anxiety.

Here’s the good news: The Autumnal Equinox is on Saturday the 22nd, and it will serve to bring some balance, clarity, and openings to new pathways. Perhaps you have been walking the same path for a long time, now, and have come to a fork in the road. You haven’t known which way to go. Neither path seems significantly better for you to take than the other. The Equinox may very well just illuminate a third path for you to take- one that you could not see before; one that is better than the other two; the one that is best for you.

The Autumnal Equinox marks the time in the year when we are preparing to go into darkness, and therefore, to hibernate; to walk through your shadows. But the odd part is, we are just emerging from our shadow work this summer with all of these planets doing crazy things to make us face ourselves, and so it’s almost like we’re now preparing to emerge into the light!

And to accentuate that idea, more good news: The full moon, this month, falls on Monday the 24th in the fire sign of Aries, helping us to burn what’s holding us back to ashes, and to rise from them like a phoenix. It’s “go” time. Aries- the sign of this month’s full moon- my dear darling, is the first sign of the zodiac, and is known for being the “fire starter”; for creating new projects; for jumping into new beginnings. The full moon, itself, is a great time for helping to bring things to a head, bringing voice to the forefront, and creation, in general.  And, carrying the energy of the Autumnal Equinox from two days before, this full moon will be setting our souls and nature’s leaves aflame in preparation to unleash ourselves to the earth in vibrancy. It is time to share your story. To speak your truth. To tell others what is on your mind. To voice your ideas and your opinions. To start your newest project.

If there is anytime to manifest clarity, new modalities, balance, and even rest and recuperation, it is now.

Wishing you much luck and love in finding your pathway, encouraging your inner fire, and just breathing and integrating balance during this time.

Much love,

xx Rachel at D2S <3

PS- Looking for a way to celebrate this full moon and equinox??

1) An in-person, group ritual for the full moon and the equinox, following a workshop about how we work with the moon and what it means to us and for us, will take place in Grand Rapids at The Wellness Collective on Sunday the 23rd at 6pm. Find more info, here, and email to reserve your space!

2) If you are more of a private person and are looking for some direction, a ritual for this month’s full moon, AND a separate ritual for the Autumnal Equinox can both be found here at Rituals will be accessible only by patrons until 48-72 hours after the astrological event occurs when they will be released to the public.
